Jennifer Mauney Smith, O.D. was born and raised in Yancey County, and graduated Valedictorian from Mountain Heritage High School in 1997. She attended Appalachian State University and graduated with honors in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then went on to graduate from the University of Alabama, Birmingham with a Doctor of Optometry in 2005. She completed a residency in pediatric optometry and vision therapy from the Southern California College of Optometry and began full-time optometric practice in Morehead City, NC in 2006. She practiced in two private offices in eastern NC until July 2010 when she and her husband Kent returned to her home in the mountains to raise their two daughters. She attends Salem United Methodist Church in Weaverville where her husband is the pastor. She sees patients of all ages and provides full scope optometric care. She is a member of BSK Optometric Honor Society and the American Optometric Association, and serves on the board of directors of the Blue Ridge Partnership for Children. She enjoys family hikes and bike rides and playing horn in the Toe River Chamber Ensemble.
